Efficency

Postby jimo2 » Mon Aug 13, 2012 12:27 am

We have a yukon eagle wood/coal/oil combo furnace installed 9 yrs ago and have always had trouble with efficiency. We use around 20 cord of wood a season or 275 gallons of fuel oil a month (late October to early April). The thermostat is set around 65-70. The installer used flex duct instead of tin and 3 cold air returns all on the ground floor. There is between 1 and 3 in each of the upstairs bedrooms, the living room has 4 heat ducts and a cold air return, the dining room has two heat ducts and a cold air return, the kitchen has 2 heat ducts and a cold air return, the entry has one heat duct, and the laundry room has one heat duct. The house is almost 3000 sq ft. Please let us know if there is any way to make the furnace more efficient or how we could burn coal in the furnace.

Thank you for posting.
First thing I have to say is that the installer using flex ducting is extremely scary. If you ever have a power outage put out the wood fire immediatly please!

On the issue of efficiency it sounds to me most likely like the barometric draft regulator was never set properly. It should be set with a hot, clean chimney to a .03" W.C. I can only assume that if the installer used flex ducting they also neglected to do this part of the installation. Without it you will get 40% efficiency rather than 80% on the oil burner. There should also be a 6 inch fresh combustion vent into your furnace room so there is never a negative pressure inside your home.

The furnace fan should also be set to its highest setting. The top pulley is adjustable and you will want it to be as tight as it can be set because of your circulation.

20 chords of wood is a lot of wood are you talking face chords or full chords? You should be getting a realistic 8-10 hour burn time using dry hardwood such as an oak, ash, maple or paper birch.

Thanks,

Bill
